Blogger and Google services

THE WIRE is hosted on Blogger, a Google service. Google receives technical information when your browser connects to its services. Blogger uses cookies for service delivery and traffic analysis, and shares information such as IP address, browser information, performance and security metrics with Google. Blogger also supplies readership statistics to the publication.

Optional Google Analytics

THE WIRE uses Google Analytics 4 only after you choose Allow analytics. It helps us measure audience and site usage, including page views, reading activity and clicks to our shop or public email contact. We do not load our Google Analytics tag, create its cookies or send its analytics requests before you allow it. Rejecting analytics keeps it off.

Our Google Analytics setup has no advertising features enabled. Google Signals and ad personalization are off, and advertising consent remains denied. We do not send email addresses, names, message text, form values or site-search text as analytics events. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies, including _ga cookies, after consent to distinguish visits and understand site usage.

Use Privacy choices in the footer at any time to reopen the choice. Choosing Reject analytics after previously allowing it withdraws consent, stops future collection by our Google Analytics tag, removes accessible first-party GA cookies and reloads the page with analytics blocked. Withdrawal does not erase data already collected; contact us about a related privacy request.

We save only your allowed or rejected analytics choice in local browser storage, without a name, email address or personal identifier. The choice applies to this browser on this site until you change it or clear that storage. If your browser cannot save the choice, analytics stays off. This analytics control is independent of advertising consent and does not control Blogger statistics, embedded players or external services described on this page.

Email and comments

When you email our public Gmail address, your email address, message and any attachments are sent to that mailbox through your email provider and Google's email service. Include only the information needed for your enquiry. For questions about access to or deletion of correspondence you have sent, contact the same address and identify the message concerned.

Where comments are available, Blogger handles the comment interface and Google Account sign-in. A published comment and its displayed account identity may be visible to other readers. Avoid posting information you want to keep private.

Spotify, YouTube and other links

Articles may contain embedded Spotify audio and YouTube videos. These players connect to their providers when they load or are used; the provider may receive device and usage information and use cookies or similar technology. Your settings and any account you have with that service can affect how it handles this activity.

Cookies and your choices

You can manage or delete cookies in your browser and adjust your Google and Spotify account settings. Blocking cookies may affect sign-in or embedded-player functions. Browser controls do not replace any consent choices offered by a service.

We have published a Google Privacy & messaging consent message for visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, with Consent, Do not consent and Manage options choices. We are still testing its live display, saved choices and withdrawal function; these have not yet been verified. Google's delivery code is installed on editorial pages, while this Privacy Policy and our other information pages remain free of that code. The Blogger cookie notice is information about Google's services; it is not confirmation that advertising consent has been obtained.

Planned advertising

THE WIRE does not currently serve publisher-controlled AdSense ads. Embedded services may display their own advertising, which they control. We are preparing the site for possible future AdSense use.

If Google ads are enabled, Google and other advertising vendors may use cookies to show ads based on visits to this and other websites. Advertising cookies can allow Google and its partners to personalize those ads. You can manage Google ad personalization in Google Ad Settings; participating third-party choices are available through YourAdChoices. Applicable consent controls and the advertising-vendor information will need to be in place before advertising starts.
