Hotel Lobby TikTok Trend: Quavo & Takeoff’s COLORS Clip, AI Memes, and the Takeoff Likeness Debate
Scroll TikTok or X in September 2026 and the orange booth shows up twice. Once with Quavo and Takeoff. Once with two cats, two presidents, or a Breaking Bad pair mouthing the same bars. Faces swap out. The mic pass, the choreography, and the “Hotel Lobby” audio stay. That is the Hotel Lobby TikTok trend: an AI meme built on a 2022 A COLORS SHOW session, now everywhere while listeners argue about remixing a dead artist’s image for content.
This is an explainer, not a how-to. Below: the original clip, how the format works without teaching you to upload faces, why Takeoff’s likeness is the friction point, and what Quavo actually posted when the wave landed.
The original: Unc & Phew on A COLORS SHOW
The meme starts with a record. Quavo and Takeoff dropped “Hotel Lobby (Unc & Phew)” on May 20, 2022 — first single under the uncle-and-nephew name, produced by Murda Beatz, Keanu Beats, and Fabio Aguilar. Unc & Phew was not a rebrand gimmick. Coverage treats it as what it sounds like: Quavo is Takeoff’s uncle.
Then came the clip that every remix copies. On June 17, 2022, A COLORS SHOW put them on that flat orange wall, trading verses into one hanging mic. Billboard flagged it as the first episode in a Motown Records × COLORS Black Music Month run. Official YouTube title on the COLORS channel: “Quavo & Takeoff - HOTEL LOBBY | A COLORS SHOW” (watch).
When 2026 coverage spun up — The Source, Baller Alert among them — writers kept describing that COLORS upload as past 100 million views. Third-party counters climb higher. Here we keep the press line: 100M+.
Their joint album Only Built for Infinity Links landed October 7, 2022. iHeart later called “Hotel Lobby” the lead single and the album the last project Takeoff appeared on before he was killed.
What the Hotel Lobby AI meme actually is
September 2026: creators started pasting new faces onto that COLORS frame. Complex’s explainer is the cleanest description — movements, lip-sync, and original audio hold; the subjects change. Celebrities. Cartoon characters. Athletes. Animals. Anything that fits two people on one stage. The booth and the back-and-forth already do half the work.
Complex says the format reportedly caught fire after two cats versions circulated, then spilled into celebrity and character matchups. Nobody in major coverage has pinned a verified “first” post. The spread is what is documented.
Across Complex, iHeart, What’s Trending, and The Tab, you will see pairings like Barack and Michelle Obama; Walter White and Jesse Pinkman; Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe / Spider-Man characters; Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham; Obama and Biden; Fat Joe and Big Pun; Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman — plus tech-CEO mashups, political ones, and animal cuts. Samples of range, not a homework list.
COLORS itself reposted the performance in 2025 and 2026, Complex notes. The source clip was still moving on its own before AI templates industrialized it.
Tools named in coverage (not a tutorial)
Press and product pages name a few platforms that made generation easy. Useful to know. Not useful as a recipe — The Tab already owns the how-to lane, and this piece will not walk you through a face-swap.
- Starrd: first-party Hotel Lobby template. Upload two photos, get a short vertical clip (about 15 seconds on the main page; a 30-second option exists too). Credit packs start at $4.99. Complex lists Starrd in its tools roundup.
- Summrs: a Migos Hotel Lobby AI Video generator that pitches “Put yourself in the Hotel Lobby COLORS performance…” The Tab’s Sep 25 guide runs readers through Summrs.
- CapCut: Complex and What’s Trending keep citing CapCut templates as part of why the format scaled; Baller Alert embeds CapCut-tagged TikToks in the same mix. Reported and visible — not a Wire walkthrough.
What’s Trending rounds Starrd to about five dollars for fifteen seconds. That matches Starrd’s own $4.99 credit-pack copy. If you mention price, use the first-party number.
Why Takeoff’s likeness is the hard part
Takeoff — Kirsnick Khari Ball — was shot and killed in Houston on November 1, 2022, outside a private party at a downtown billiards/bowling spot in the early morning. Houston Police identified him as the man who died. Two other people were wounded. He was 28. The COLORS set had gone up only months before.
That gap is why the meme scrapes for a lot of people. It rebuilds a stage he shared with Quavo right before he was gone. Some fans say the clip should stay a memory, not infinite raw material for cartoon and celebrity swaps. Complex logged the pushback in comments and on X — including the charge that flooding AI versions is an erasure of a deceased artist’s face for jokes.
One X user Complex quoted did not soften it:
“It’s upsetting that people decided to turn this into an Ai meme but even more disturbing that Takeoff is dead and even with that considered, y’all still circulated the erasure of that man for some dancing cartoon characters. Like come on man,”
The same coverage tracks wider worries: consent, copyright, likeness, and what happens to photos people feed into AI apps. Complex also quotes @HowTheyDidUs, arguing the upload loop is binge collecting images for face recognition and related systems.
Not every Hotel Lobby AI clip hits the same way. Silly animal versions and harder ethics threads share one timeline. The point for Wire is blunt: Takeoff’s death is not a parenthetical, and likeness is part of the story.
What Quavo actually did
On September 23, 2026, Quavo put the unaltered COLORS performance back up and aimed people at the source. Captions shift a little by platform — normal for a multi-post day — so keep them as reported:
- Instagram (Baller Alert; also iHeart): “The original!!! #HOTELLOBBY”
- Facebook (Complex): “Aye Take we viral again The original!!! #HOTELLOBBY”
- X (The Source embed of @QuavoStuntin): “The Original #HotelLobby”
Complex says outright — and Baller Alert and iHeart land in the same place — that Quavo has not publicly condemned the trend. He redirected. Celebrate going viral with Takeoff again by centering the original. The Source notes the COLORS clip sits among the last clear images of the two of them performing together. That is why the reshare lands with weight.
Redirect is not endorsement of every third-party face-swap. He celebrated the original performance and that moment with Takeoff.
What this moment leaves open
The Hotel Lobby TikTok wave did two jobs at once. It put a 2022 COLORS performance — Quavo and Takeoff on that orange wall — in front of people who may never have watched the full session. And it forced a uglier question into the same scroll: what it means to treat a deceased artist’s likeness as reusable template stock.
Lanes are already claimed. Complex has the full explainer. The Tab has the how-to. The Source, Baller Alert, iHeart, and What’s Trending covered the reclaim and the meme zoo. The quieter gap is a documented read without a tutorial dump: origin, tools named at altitude, likeness on the record.
If you only open one link, open the COLORS upload. The meme borrowed the frame. Quavo pointed back to the source.
